At St Mark’s School we have a weekly lunchtime chess club where students can compete against one another, learning from teachers and peers to improve their game.
Wins are recorded and at certain milestones they have the opportunity to earn chess badges through sitting chess tests that range in difficulty from a beginners 'Pawn' level through to an expert 'Rook' level.
Students compete each year to win a coveted chess cup, either in the Year 1-5 or Year 6-8 level. These have been contested in the past by up to 100 students.
Every year students are selected to compete in teams against other schools in the Canterbury Interschool Chess Competition. We have had great success in this event, regularly placing highly in it and finishing first in the Year 7 & 8 competition in 2015 and 2024.
Chess club welcomes all students from Year 0 through to Year 8 and offers learning of the game, strategy, sportsmanship and camaraderie.
